Before Toto was formed, members of the band played session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of session drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all performed on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 in the wake of the collaboration.

Toto's third album, Turn Back, marked a change from the more progressive sound of their earlier efforts and was criticized for its lack of hit singles. In 1985, singer Fergie Frederiksen quit the group, and the band held auditions to find a new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the album Fahrenheit in 1986.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by going through several demos and tapes from the past to release a special edition called Toto XX. The album was well-received by fans and Toto began the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

Shem von Schröck took over Leland Sklar as drummer on the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In the year 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included tour recordings and also an interview with the group.
